At the end of 2019, we completed a project that was different — yet deeply meaningful to us: we transformed an old tree stump into a mini street library, located in the heart of Shumen. For us, this wasn’t just a design initiative — it was a gesture toward the community, merging culture, aesthetics, and social engagement.
From stump to a place for ideas
The new mini library can be found in the small park on “Saedinenie” Street, near the Military School. It's hard to miss — in the core of the old stump, we embedded a book cabinet accessible to all passersby. At night, the structure glows with integrated lighting, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere for reading even after dark.
The project was made possible with the support of the Shumen Municipal Youth Council, the Municipality of Shumen, as well as with the personal contributions and hands-on efforts of volunteers. For us, this collaboration was a powerful example of how a community can come together to create something beautiful, lasting, and meaningful — driven by shared values and collective effort.
How does the library work?
The mechanism is simple but impactful:
Take a book, leave another — preferably with an eco theme.
This way, the library functions as a living space for the exchange of ideas and knowledge, while gently promoting awareness of nature and sustainability.
Some of the books were generously donated by the “St. Chilingirov” Regional Library and Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water – Shumen, for which we are extremely grateful.
Design with meaning
We believe that design should not be limited to interiors. It can be a tool for positive change in the urban environment — to provoke, to engage, and to bring people together. With this street library, we proved that even a small intervention can have great value when made with attention to detail and a sense of social responsibility.
