Supporting Healthcare Workers: We Donated 1,300 Protective Face Shields at the Height of the Pandemic
In the spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic strained healthcare systems around the world, we at Love 2 Design decided we wouldn’t stand idly by. Instead of pausing our work, we redirected our efforts toward producing protective face shieldsfor frontline medical workers. And we did it not as a business, but as an act of solidarity and compassion.
An idea born from empathy
It all began as part of the #ForTheGood (#ЗАДОБРОТО) campaign. In just a few days – thanks to social media shares, support from people across the country, and a collective effort – we managed to produce nearly 1,300 protective shields, with over 1,500 requests submitted.
We used an open-source design, originally developed by Slovak volunteers. The shields were lightweight, comfortable, easy to disinfect, and suitable for repeated use. At a time when many hospitals were struggling with shortages of protective gear, this initiative became a small but meaningful contribution to the people risking their health every day.
A donation, not a business
From the very beginning, we made it clear: the shields were not for sale. We donated them free of charge to medical professionalsin urgent need of protection. We created an online request form and encouraged everyone to act responsibly – so the shields could reach as many people as possible.
With the Support of the Community
We extend our sincere thanks to Rotary Club Shumen, who supported us financially by providing funds for materials. Some of the first batches of face shields were delivered for testing to Shumen General Hospital (MBAL Shumen), while the rest were distributed among various medical facilities across the country.
This was a true example of the power of collaboration between design, community, and a meaningful cause.
Design is also a responsibility
We believe that design goes far beyond aesthetics. In challenging moments like the pandemic, it can become a social force, a practical tool, and a conduit for human connection. Through this project, we showed that we are not only a studio for interior and product design, but also a team with a mission – and a heart.
